A Chinese Prayer
China town, Victoria,BC
August 1984
I wrote these lines while “staying” in Victoria’s “Chinatown” for 9 years during the 80’s.
I use the word “staying” , because I always felt I was just a visitor, during all those years.
Oh.. face me east
when I die.
Let me face the red
portals of eternity.
So I can hear
the stones of fortune turn,
on hot summer nights.
So I can follow
the scent of herbs
and spices
floating through
the air
tantalizing my senses.
Give me the night
so I can stay hidden
from the white devils
surrounding me,
Keep my children close
So they can not be corrupted
by their decadence
Give me luck, so I may beat the dice
and die in piece
a rich man.
